Time to kick the tires & light the fires. LETS DO IT AGAIN CHICAGO. Go Cubs Go!

So after popular request to do this again (3 people), I've decided to pick up where I left off last year blogging about the Chicago Cubs. The World Champion Chicago Cubs. As we prepare for the 2017 playoff run, I find myself nowhere near at the same anxiety level as I was last year. Not having an 108 year curse monkey on my back could have something to do with that. My cigars are already clipped and smoked. I have seen the Chicago Cubs win a world series in my life time. Heaven can come get me now.

Now down to business. The issue is that this year for the Cubs the pitching is not as strong as it was last year and Joe Maddon will have to manage this team like he has never managed if the Cubs are going to get past Washington Nationals (NLDS favorites) who can match the Cubs bat for bat and definitely has the edge in pitching. We do not have an ace or a pitcher with ace like stats this year and will have to hope that Lester, Hendricks and Arietta can recapture that magic from the past few years for one more deep post season run. In fact out of all the teams in the playoffs only the Rockies and Astros have a worse pitching staff and the Rockies could be going home tonight after the Wild Card game. That means the 6 of 7 remaining teams including, you guest it, the number one team Cleveland Indians whom probably should have won last year had fate not intervened, all have better pitching staffs with that shut down ace that the Cubs have lacked all year. Lester has already earned that big contract, and deservedly so, but now it is time for him to earn that bonus.

So for the casual Cub fan or those that don't know, for the last time, pitching and defense wins championships in Baseball. Not home runs, 3 -pointers, interceptions, 60 yard field goals or birdies as they would say in golf. The bullpen will not be able to dance around this and everybody will need to kick in like men!

Time to kick the tires and light the fires. #GoCubsGo

THE LAST DANCE IN WRIGLEYVILLE 2016

Game 5 Wrigley Field, World Series 2016

For the first time ever, we got to sing “Go Cubs Go”, written by Steve Goodman, in our home park in the World Series.

An estimated 300,000 people were in Wrigleyville for this last home game. I would say WE WERE ALL NERVOUS. Including A-Rod, Pete Rose and Big Frank.

In the end, the Cubs did what they have done all year, show resilience. The difference is, this game was do or die.  No matter what the outcome becomes of this series, the Cubs have forever shattered the curse. If they lose, they just lost to a better more prepared team. Remember the curse rears its ugly head when crazy events happen that cause the team to fold and lose a series in a dramatic collapse. The Cubs had plenty of chances to do that however they never folded. When an epic collapse seemed eminent on the home floor for this seasons best team, the Cubs did not fold.

Cleveland Indians, you're going to have to BEAT the Chicago Cubs flat out.  As a famous president once said, "We will not go silently into the night, we will not go without a fight"  Ok, maybe that was a quote from the movie Independence day but it rings true about the 2016 Chicago Cubs. Make no mistake, teams built like the Cleveland Indians win the world series and power teams built like the Chicago Cubs, struggle against great pitching which is why, analytically, I picked Cleveland to win the series against the team that I heart.
In the next day or two, somebody will be pop champagne like the famous Jim Jones song. Regardless of the outcome, this series was one for the ages and the Chicago Cubs have won in 2016.

AND THE BEST CUBS PLAYER IS.....

Anthony Rizzo

FOR NEW CUBS FANS, & casual fans, this is Anthony Rizzo. THIS is the Cubs leader AND best player. Not Baez, Bryant, Arietta. Schwarber, Hendricks, Lester, etc. When he hits, the Cubs win easily. When he doesn't, the Cubs struggle to win. In the Dodgers series, the Cubs went 1 win and 2 losses when he didn't hit, and 3 and 0 when he did. Last year the Cubs went 3 and 1 when Rizzo hit and 0 and 4 when he didn't in the playoffs. Despite Bryant's fabulous MVP year this year, Baez emergence, which all Cubs fans saw coming, and Jake's Dominance last year, Rizzo has led the team in the HRs and RBI's every year. Bryant finally lead in HRs this year. Bryant bats in front of Rizzo (never behind) when means he benefits from the pitchers fear of facing Rizzo with runners on base. That makes a big difference. So Bryant sees the best pitches in the line up to hit and he delivers. That how baseball works. Rizzo also catches all the wild throws from Baez & Bryant. Otherwise a lot of those spectacular plays you see from them would be game changing errors. His defense is stellar too. It's ok to have favorites, Like I said in my last post, Schwarber is mine. But make no mistake, DAT DUDE is Rizzo. Shut him down? Beat the Cubs. He gets off? Cubs Win!! Period.

Why Joe Maddon May Have Lost The World Series For The City of Chicago in Game 1 of the World Series

In baseball's post season, you cannot give up any outs, any at bats and definitely any games. Every pitch is crucial and every play can determine the outcome of an entire series. Here is why the insertion of Kyle Schwarber in to the starting lineup cost the Cubs game 1 and may have cost the Cubs the World Series. Now before you accuse me of second guessing our beloved coach whom I love as well, after the game, please note that when I first heard the possibility of this news before it broke I said no way would they make this move.  Then once the news broke, I posted a highlight of Schwarber on my facebook page before the game stating that he is my favorite player however I did not agree with this move.  See that post HERE.  Schwarber should not have been put in that situation and should not be expected to be able to deliver over an entire game. If he does, great, I am wrong, Cubs win the World Series and I am the happiest fan in the world. Baseball is about timing and is also about numbers and having multiple opportunities. Contreras probably should have been the DH. He is batting .400 in the post season and has come up with timely hits all year including in both rounds of the playoffs. Therefore he should have had every opportunity. Schwarber delivered what proved to be a meaningless 2 out double in the 2nd inning but barely missed the fences in what would have been an epic home run. He struck out when it counted the most, representing the tying run in the 8th inning with 2 on and looked off balance.

My biggest fear going into this series was 1) Maddon being too smart and making one move too many, 2) Javier Baez trying to do too much on the biggest stage and making a crucial error at the worst time. What the Cubs attempted to do was catch lightning in a bottle from a guy (who again is my favorite player) but hasn't played all year. Not to mention interrupting the Cubs chemistry. This was similar to what the Bulls attempted to do in 1995 in Michael Jordan’s return to the NBA. Although it galvanized the NBA and gave the city hope, ultimately the Chicago Bulls lost to Shaquille O’Neal and the Orlando Magic and Michael Jordan was not in NBA shape which contributed to that loss.  Jordan came back during the tail end of the regular season so he had time to attempt to get up to speed but was unsuccessful. Schwarber is being asked to come back in the championship round against the best pitching with only four opportunities per game to get his swing and his timing back. This is something that it usually takes months in spring training to do. He was asked to do it in one day on the biggest stage. Trying to catch lighting in the bottle should have better been applied ie, the 1988 Los Angeles Dodgers.  For those who didn't know, that year, their best player by the name of Kirk Gibson was hobbled by injury and was only placed in the game as pinch hitter in the 9th inning in an all or nothing dire situation.  After limping up to the plate, he of course after almost striking out, delivered a two strike home run which galvanized the team and the city and lead the Dodgers to capturing their last World Series title against the heavily favorite and loaded Oakland Athletics team who was lead by the bash brothers Mark Mcquire and Jose Canseco.  Had Gibson been inserted in the starting lineup, he would have surely struck out several times and the Dodgers may not have even been in that situation to make a comeback in the latter innings.
I am no journalist or paid baseball expert (believe me had I known that these guys would make millions just talking about sports and giving their opinions, I would’ve gladly traded in my Engineering degree for a Journalism degree). I am merely giving my opinion, like they do, through my knowledge and vision of what was my favorite game growing up in the city of Chicago.  I pray that the Cubs can recover from this game 1 loss but as you probably already know 12 out of the last 13 teams that won the first game went on to win the World Series.  In the past 30 years, 86% of teams that won the first game, went on to win the World Series. None of those teams had a 108 year curse hanging over their head. Cubs will have to once again defy the odds. They have been resilient all year. If this series goes 7 and the Cubs lose, this game will be remembered for its missed opportunities. If this is really our year, they will overcome this and their weakness against the off-speed pitch to bring home the trophy.
